Nerds and Geeks of this world please unite.

Nitin Pai writes that Nerds and Geeks should lobby for the Scheduled tribe status as they fulfill almost most of the criteria. And in some of those criteria they even out score Meenas and Gurjars. Well, as per the Indian Costitution (ST) Order 1950. The criteria fixed for inclusion of a community in the list of STs are:

1. Indications of primitive traits,
2. Distinctive culture,
3. Geographical isolation,
4. Shyness of contact with the community at large, and
5. Backwardness

Well my explanation on all these criteria are -

1) Primitive Traits - Unshaven face, long hairs crying for comb, unwashed clothes, they all are indications of primitive traits. They can be found living in dilapidated one bed room flats in the outskirts of the city paying exorbitant rentals.

2) Distinctive culture - Microsoft calls it caffeine culture and anything with caffeine in it is free for the employees. Apple calls it "90 hours a week and I am loving it" culture. People have to work like dogs here and don't ask BPO workers they will tell you a lot about how distinct their culture is.

3) Isolation - Well, these people love dark places and the only company they normally desire is a lap/Palm/Desk top. Unlimited supply of coffee and fags (cigs) is all they want.

4) Shyness - not required to be explained as they are treated as some cheap labour by MNCs and back in India they are again a separate community and have their own language (in bits n bytes and abbreviations like T/P/C/E(L) and TLAs). The kind of salary that they get (mostly freshers) makes it harder to socialize. They prefer drinking beer in the isolation of their homes.

5) Well, with fulfilling all the four criteria makes this fifth one redundant (perhaps the fifth one was written to fill the pages only, or to include some more people as it cannot be defined). Who could be more backward than this? Not even Meenas or Gurjars. I am sure.

Well, so what next? Dharna, strikes or what? My advice - don't do any of this. Chinese are knocking at the door of your organizations. And politicians don't care about you because you don't vote. But anyways you are true STs and not those who are fighting it out on the streets.
