Sivaji - "The Hype"

Since the last few days I am finding myself into several unwanted discussions about "Sivaji'. Well, if you are in the heart of Tamil land then this is expected after every release of Rajini but I am glad that I am here for only two years and given the record of Rajini there will be only one movie in 2 years so I am braced. Have never seen or imagined this kind of hype in my life. We use to hear stories about the temples built and idolizing Rajini but we use to think that those are stories yaar. One year in Chennai and all those images are coming back. People do worship Rajini or what else could explain mad rush for the movie tickets? But what is interesting is the new way of marketing the movie.

New(s) channel of marketing - With the no. of digital news channel soaring there is a competition for news and normally the headline reads something like "Rani is engaged to Aditya" the other channel will air "Rani is not engaged to Aditya". First the news channels aired the advance booking hype that how people stood in a one kilometer long queue or how much they paid. They interviewed all sort of people.

Building the hype -
In the week before the movie they started a controversy by comparing Rajini and Amitabh. I am a north Indian and I have seen that even South Indian audience watch Amitabh movies but honestly speaking I don't know any old friend of mine who liked Rajini. Well, maybe I have a limited friends circle.
After the first week, the hype was about collection. Sivaji has made impressive collections in Southern states and overseas and there was news about how it made into UK top 10 in the first week itself and was the first Tamil movie ever.

"Jhoom Barabar Jhoom" Vs. "Sivaji" - Well, news channels went gaga over this fact and nobody even aired a single line about "Jhoom Barabar Jhoom" which was released with Sivaji and have collected 150% of what Sivaji grossed in the first week. (The image above is snapshot from IMDB) JBJ which I have already voted as a trash movie, I think for a movie like this beating Sivaji in collections in the first week was an impressive feat. But yeah, no news channel reprted this. That indicatees that what we hear on news about Sivaji maybe paid advertising. Or may be it's normal for Hindi movies

Well, there was another hype about the number of screens in which the movie opened, if we compare UK market then JBJ opened in 47 screens compared to 12 screens of Sivaji. Sivaji was no doubt had the better average per screen but the popularity meter indicates that still A Rajini hit in UK cannot spark the acceptability in more screens.

Sivaji is a sure hit and may it be the hype, may it be the music, may it be the idol worship. My only point is that there are no point in debating whether Amitabh is better or Rajini. Or Sholay was the top grosser or Sivaji? Who has better business sense or who has better screen presence? Who is more popular? There are thousand ways to prove and disprove the same thing. News channels sells controversy because people buy controversy. I don't know the mad rush even make people say things which nobody in their sane mind should speak like "you can't pirate Sivaji" Well, for those people I have this advice - "World is bigger and smarter then what we imaging it to be." (this is the download torrent) So let's not act like fools.
